Small Town Fame. This story has a anticlimactic ending.

This picture was in the paper today. After posting it on ‘twitter’ I was contacted by Lauren @SpenGLauren and she asked if it could be used in the paper. No big thing really.

However, it did get me thinking about other times I had been in the local ‘rag’. There are the obvious local music events; in which a sniper photographer has caught playing back ground music in the middle of the day, in between tech’ing and doing the odd bit of running around. So, I look like a chavvy bum that’s playing for spare change.

Other times were when I did the extracurricular musical theatre activities for charity events or ‘duck tape’ pantomimes. These time were when I could get away with wearing make up and have a valid excuse as to why someone in the local shouldn’t punch me in the face, if I had forgotten to take it off (I say forgotten, I liked it really).

It has to be said though, my greatest local news paper achievement was an un-named entry I got when I was about 16. He is the story: Me and a good friend Leigh decided to go and visit my brother in Essex. He was studying musical theatre down there and we rightly assumed that if we visit him, there would be many beautifully frivolous dancers. Not to brag, but my first night there I got in to bed with a girl whose name I can’t remember nor what she looked like for that matter. Anywho, the last night of our visit we went to watch LOTR: The Two Towers. It’s an incredibly long film so by the time we got out it was around one in the morning and we had 200miles to drive that night. I saw we, it was Leigh who was doing all the driving.

To Leigh’s frustration I fell asleep on the way back, which is not the only time I’ve failed terrible and being his ‘wing man’ in a sense but the other story will have to be told some other time. We must have got home around 5AM, I crawled strait to bed hoping that I would sleep for the next few days. My dreams were filled with the memories of the dancers I had recently witnessed, so I was all set for an epic fantasy that would take me places a young boy should never think about.

Then! a shriek, a scream, I heard my name been called from down stairs, it was my mothers voice. In my hazy state I decided to ignore her and try to go back to sleep. Then came the smell of burning. My first thought was “for fucks sake”, I crawled back across my badroom as I had done a few hours before and opened the bedroom door, smoke filled the landing. As hastily as a teenager would, I began my decent down the stairs to find my mother running back and forth from the kitchen, on the phone to what I could only assume were the fire brigade. I looked to the kitchen and there was some bacon on fire under the grill.

Knowing what I learned in school about fire safety, shaking my head at my mother, I picked up a towel from the wash basket, dipped in the sink and laid the towel over the burning bacon. I began back to bed when my mother informed me the fire service was on its was. Repeating my first profanity I reluctantly got dressed and waited for them to arrive. The week after a story was in the paper stating ‘local boy prevents house fire’. In that moment, a craziness of thoughts entered my head. Such as, ‘maybe I’m a superhero’ and ‘I need a cool superhero name’. Those thoughts quickly left me when reality swiftly kicked me in my metaphorical balls, reminding me I was a ridiculous person.

2012 was an eventful year to say to most… I took myself on tour around England and met some amazing folks. The highlights were playing at ‘Goring Unplugged’ and my homecoming gig at ‘Bar 1:22’. Not that the other gigs meant any less, these were my favorites.

I leant a lot about performance and giving people a better quality of entertainment. My jokes could be better but I’ve never been that funny really. The best thing to come out of it all is that I want to do it all again this year and as it was so busy last year, I’m going to start booking gigs now. If you would like me to come and do a house gig or play at your local venue, Just send me a message and I will arrange something.

The blatant lack of new recordings is something I wanted to address last year but the whole song writing process has taken me far and beyond the type of material I expected to produce. With this in mind, I decided to take a writing break from September, which is why my activity has been so quiet. Plus I broke my iPhone, which for some people was a relief, as this stopped me from clogging up there news feeds with daily post of what I’m thinking. Usual my thought process consists of Doctor Who and sex; not together, though it would be kinky, its also a bit weird. So expect some new tunes coming your way over the next couple of months.

Thats about all I wanted to say but please do get in touch and let me know your thoughts or feel free to invite me where ever you want me to be.

Hi all,

I was supposed to be playing on Manchester Radio Online on Monday but unfortunately we had to cancel due to technical difficulties. This wouldn’t have been a major issue, however, my friends drove over to support me as they have been busy filming there latest project. They arrived to find me shrugging and displaying the entirety of my bottom lip, they were nice enough to say they were ok with my professional failure; you would think it was expected of me from the reaction I got.

All was not lost, I met the lovely Chantelle Warner who suggested an open mic night just around the corner at ‘Trof’, just at the top of the Northern Quarter. So, me and the crew ventured out and found a lovely looking little bar (the right one, it just looked to nice for the likes of me). It was a great place, one that serves Brooklyn Larger and a selection of other trendy brews.

The started, hosted by the incredibly handsome Guy. The multitude and great music played that night was great and most of all were Claire and Peter; an Irish Duo bringing the beautiful soul often found from them across the sea. It was all good. If you get the chance I recommend it to you all, Every Monday from 8pm.

As for the radio, Im playing at Ducie Bridge on Saturday 4th August for the guys there and hopefully ill be on there shoe between now and then.

Last night I played at The Grove Inn, Leeds. This is a really good venue for anyone who plays acoustic or any type of folk/routes music. The sound there is crystal clear and is mixed superbly by Mat White the organiser. One of this nice touches about this venue is the hat collection for the musicians. Rather than charge a door fee a hat is passed around and people throw in whatever they want. I think this is a system more venues should adopt rather than charging a door fee and not paying the musicians anything.
